Looking for a skilled leader to take its operational capabilities to the next level. The Director of DevOps would work with their peers in the R&D leadership team to enable increasingly sound, secure, cost-effective and efficient delivery and operations of product and services. They will be a partner with the business in managing risks and opportunities.
The successful candidate will set direction for managing operational concerns and lead a global team of engineers to implement, monitor, educate and empower product development teams around those concerns. These concerns include the DevOps toolchain, monitoring, alerting and observability, site reliability, cost assessment, security and risk, and compliance.
They have fully embraced the DevOps philosophy of software delivery, expecting development teams to incorporate operational responsibilities and ownership over the success of their software in production. Therefore, the Director of DevOps and team are primarily responsible for putting development teams in a position to be successful.
Serve as a contributing member of R&D leadership team.
Work to continually mature and evolve ability to gain insight into the operational state of its global deployments, effectively respond to emerging issues and meet SLOs.
Work to build out a robust Site Reliability Engineering practice and deliver infrastructure enhancements to support availability, disaster recovery, scalability, etc.
Apply methodologies for characterizing risk and facilitate decision-making around it at various levels of the organization.
Set standards around cloud security practices and work with engineering leaders to get them into practice.
Oversee compliance efforts.
Continuously work to improve developer efficiency and effectiveness through tooling, education and practice – make it easy for product teams to create operationally-sound, cost-effective solutions.
Required Skills and Experience
As this role is a leadership position centered around rapidly evolving technologies, candidates are not expected to have extensive applied knowledge in all technical areas. General knowledge of concerns and experience working with teams to navigate decision-making is preferred.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in Computer Science or related disciplines.
At least 5 years of DevOps leadership experience, preferably with a global software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform company.
Experience characterizing and communicating risk, and facilitating decision-making involving risk mitigation and tradeoffs.
Experience in implementing compliance initiatives for IT projects or product offerings.
Experience with AWS (other cloud platforms are a plus) – including navigating technology evaluation and cost projection and tracking.
Experience with scalable networking technologies.
Experience implementing HA and DR strategies.
Experience with common CI/CD and orchestration technologies (Git, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, Puppet, Chef, Jenkins, TeamCity)
Experience with monitoring, alerting, and observability tools.
Experience in system administration tasks in Linux, Unix, or Windows with familiarity with standard IT security practices (such as encryption, certificates, key management)
Exceptional interpersonal, communication (spoken and written) and influencing skills.
Strong leadership and management skills, both with personnel and projects.
